My Teacher Is a Monster by Peter Brown

Bobby has a big problem at school.

Her name is Ms. Kirby.

"She’s loud, she yells, and if you throw paper airplanes, she won’t let you enjoy recess. Ms. Kirby is a monster! Luckily, Bobby can go to the park on weekends to unwind. And then one day…on the way to his favorite spot…Bobby finds a terrible surprise. You guessed it, it’s Ms. Kirby! But as he gets to know Ms. Kirby outside of school, something strange happens. She begins to look a bit less like a monster, and a bit more like a person." ~ from PeterBrownStudio

“This playful, eye-catching story goes a long way to humanize both teachers and students.”

This is one of my children's favorite bedtime stories (and as a teacher myself, I love it too!). It's perfect for the back-to-school season especially if your little ones are worried their new teacher will be... MEAN! (eek!)

As you read, see if your kiddos notice how the illustrations of the teacher change throughout the story!

Mr. Fox's Game of "No!" written by David LaRochelle and illustrated by Mike Wohnoutka

"Can you beat Mr. Fox at his Game of No? The rules are simple: every time he asks a question, you must respond with “NO.” If you accidentally say “YES,” then it’s back to the beginning of the book for you, where you must start all over again. Are you ready? (Oops!) Do you live on planet Earth? Are you stronger than a baby? What does Y-E-S spell? (Argh!) Kids will giggle uncontrollably as they gamely aim to avoid Mr. Fox’s clever traps—but just ask them if they’d like to read this book again, and they won’t be able to resist: “YES!”" ~ Penguin Random House

This is SUCH a fun book to read with your kids -- just don't let them purposely say YES to keep starting the book over (and over, and over, and over, infinitely delaying bedtime!). You're sure to get giggles with this story and its very clever ending.

My 8 year old's current favs: "For picture books, anything by Jon Klassen like The Rock From The Sky. Also by Dan Santat, but I also like his graphic novels like The Aquanaut. And the other graphic novel I'm really into right now is the Hilo Series."
